Project Overview
Amiri was appointed to deliver a two-phase development for Waypoint Church, providing a modern community and worship facility.
The project was designed to significantly enhance the church’s capacity, flexibility and presence within the local area, while ensuring continuity of use throughout the works.
Phase 1 comprised the construction of a new 1,670m² community and worship building with associated external works. The new building was arranged over single and two storeys and positioned immediately adjacent to, but not physically connected with, the existing church. Internally, it included a striking double-height sanctuary seating up to 500 people with a stage, a double-height activity hall, a welcoming entrance foyer with café facilities and dedicated office accommodation.
Phase 2 followed the completion of the new building and involved the remodelling and refurbishment of the existing church facility. This included the insertion of a new mezzanine floor to create an additional first-floor multi-use room, along with a reconfiguration of the internal layout to improve functionality. Throughout both phases, the existing church and car park remained fully operational, requiring careful planning and close liaison with the church community.

Key Challenges & Solutions
Maintaining Full Church Operations Throughout the Build
The church and its car park needed to remain in continuous use during both phases of construction, with regular services, events and community activities taking place.
The works were carefully phased and sequenced, with clear separation between construction areas and public zones. Regular communication with church representatives ensured that key dates and activities were accommodated, allowing the project to progress safely and efficiently without disrupting day-to-day operations.
Delivering Two Distinct Phases with Seamless Integration
The project required the delivery of a substantial new-build facility followed by sensitive refurbishment works to an existing building, both of which needed to function cohesively once complete.
Detailed coordination between the design, construction and refurbishment elements ensured that the new and existing spaces complemented one another. The remodelling works were planned to align with the operational needs of the church, resulting in a unified and flexible overall facility.

I have been involved in many building schemes, both in my time working for local churches as well as in the public sector, and I can say with hand on heart this particular project has gone incredibly smoothly[…] We are delighted with way the new building has turned out. It has already made a huge difference to the way we operate and has resulted in a vast improvement to the street scene along Friarsgate. In particular I want to thank you for the way your team, especially those based on site, worked with us as a church. All my staff have been very complimentary about how helpful and accommodating you all were. Please pass on our thanks to them.

Project Outcomes
The completed Waypoint Church development delivered a high-quality, modern facility that has transformed the way the church operates and engages with the local community. The new building provides significantly increased capacity, flexible spaces for worship and activities and a welcoming café and foyer that encourages community interaction.
The refurbishment of the existing church building further enhanced the overall functionality of the site, creating additional multi-use accommodation and improving internal flow. Together, the two phases have resulted in a cohesive, future-proofed church campus that has made a positive impact on both the congregation and the surrounding streetscape along Friarsgate.
The project was completed successfully in January 2020, with the church expressing strong satisfaction with both the process and the finished result, highlighting the collaborative approach and consideration shown by the site team throughout the works.
