Project Overview

Amiri was appointed to undertake the refurbishment of St Paul’s Church in Winchester, a large Victorian church dating back to the 1870s.

Due to the historic nature of the building, every stage of the refurbishment required careful planning and sensitive handling to preserve original features while delivering modern upgrades.

The works were carried out in phases and included a complete re-flooring of the church to create a safe, single-level surface, the installation of underfloor heating, internal re-ordering, and the formation of a new chapel. Further phases involved the creation of a new community meeting space, kitchen, and toilets, followed by the development of additional community facilities including a purpose-built pre-school, office spaces, staff accommodation and a catering kitchen.

To enable the works to proceed safely and efficiently, the church congregation was temporarily decanted into a nearby community centre, with Amiri’s on-site team coordinating the move with care and precision.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Working Within a Historic Victorian Church: The building’s age meant that great care was required to avoid damaging original features during refurbishment.

Continuous liaison with church representatives ensured that all elements were handled correctly, with works planned to protect the historic fabric while delivering modern improvements.

Decanting the Congregation to a Temporary Facility: The church needed to remain operational off-site during construction.

Amiri’s site team coordinated the careful move of equipment, furniture, and key items into the neighbouring community centre, ensuring uninterrupted continuity of church activities.

Replacing the Entire Floor Structure: Installing a new single-level floor with underfloor heating required significant upheaval and precise sequencing.

The programme was carefully planned to minimise disruption, with phased works that allowed sensitive demolition and reinstatement while maintaining safety and structural integrity.

Your choice of site supervisor could not have been better as he delivered a superb project with great confidence and efficiency, whilst keeping quality to the fore. There was a ‘can-do’ and collaborative approach which was appreciated by all concerned.

Project Outcomes

The refurbishment has transformed St Paul’s Church into a more accessible, flexible and welcoming space for both worship and wider community use. The new single-level floor and underfloor heating enhance comfort and safety, while the new chapel and re-ordered internal layout create a more cohesive environment for services and events.

The addition of modern community facilities provides long-term value to the parish and supports a broad range of activities, from pre-school provision to meetings and staff accommodation. The project was delivered with close collaboration between Amiri and the church team, ensuring the historic character of the building remained respected throughout.
