Project Overview
A new Endoscopy Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.
Amiri successfully delivered the new Endoscopy Unit at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, commissioned by Equans and Portsmouth NHS Trust. The project involved the detailed design and construction of a modern clinical facility within the existing ground floor and basement of the Lancaster Building, requiring significant structural alterations to accommodate the new clinical layout.
The completed unit includes four procedure rooms, dedicated recovery areas and a fully equipped decontamination suite. Works also encompassed new external services, drainage infrastructure, and associated external works. All construction activity took place within a live, fully operational hospital setting, demanding meticulous planning and coordination to ensure continuity of patient care and hospital operations.

Key Challenges & Solutions
Working Within a Live Hospital Environment: The hospital remained fully operational throughout construction, with critical clinical services located in close proximity.
Amiri implemented strict logistics planning, noise control measures, and continuous liaison with hospital management to ensure all works were carried out safely and with minimal impact on patients, staff, and public circulation.
Maintaining Emergency Access at All Times: Emergency vehicle routes and ambulance access points could not be obstructed under any circumstances.
Designated access routes were established and monitored daily, and construction sequencing was adapted to ensure emergency access remained clear at all times.
Extensive Structural Alterations Within an Existing Building: Working inside the Lancaster Building required careful structural modifications while maintaining the integrity of the hospital’s operations above and around the work area.
Close collaboration with structural engineers and Equans allowed sequencing to be planned in detail, with temporary works and structural reinforcements delivered safely and effectively.

Project Outcomes
The completed Endoscopy Unit provides QA Hospital with a high-quality, purpose-built facility designed to increase diagnostic capacity and improve the overall patient experience. The layout supports smoother patient flow, enhanced privacy and improved operational efficiency. The new decontamination suite and upgraded procedure rooms bring the hospital in line with the latest clinical standards.
The overall project was delivered to a high specification without disrupting the hospital’s daily operations. The result is a modern, efficient and reliable facility. Strengthening the Trust’s ability to deliver essential endoscopy services to the local community.
