Project Overview

Construction of a two-storey inpatient hospice within a live hospital campus.

Amiri was appointed to deliver the construction of a new two-storey, 10-bed inpatient hospice facility at the Countess of Brecknock Hospice, located within the busy Andover War Memorial Hospital campus. The scheme also included refurbishment works to the existing hospice, carried out in a live healthcare environment providing maternity services, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation care, day surgery and a minor injuries unit.

The new extension adjoins the existing hospice, creating a seamless connection between the facilities. Designed to offer a calm and comfortable environment for patients and families, the building includes family bedrooms, specialist ablution facilities with assisted bath hydraulics, and digital media access throughout.

High-specification systems were incorporated, including medical gases, an integrated nurse call system linked to the existing network, and a sophisticated access control system connected to staff mobile devices. Every element was carefully planned to support the hospice’s goal of delivering exceptional care within a modern, compassionate environment.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Working Within a Live Hospital Environment: The project took place on a busy hospital site that remained fully operational throughout construction, requiring strict coordination and minimal disruption to patient care.

Amiri developed a detailed logistics and communication plan in collaboration with hospital management. Deliveries and noisy works were carefully scheduled to avoid sensitive times, while safety barriers and wayfinding ensured uninterrupted access for patients and staff.

Creating a Comforting Environment in a Clinical Setting: Balancing high medical specifications with a warm, non-institutional atmosphere was essential to the hospice’s ethos.

Amiri collaborated with designers, clinical staff, and user groups to select finishes, lighting and layouts that promote comfort and dignity. Family-focused spaces and patient-centred design features were incorporated throughout.

Having the Project Managers onsite has enabled us to discuss developments in real time to ensure both Amiri and COBH get the best outcome for our future patients. Our flexible working relationship with Amiri has also enabled us to visit the site with important guests and helped us to raise our profile, benefitting our fundraising drive.

Project Outcomes

The completed Countess of Brecknock Hospice provides an expanded and upgraded facility that significantly enhances end-of-life care provision in the Andover region.

The building offers a welcoming, peaceful environment for patients, families and staff. The inclusion of family accommodation, accessible bathing facilities, and integrated digital systems ensures that both comfort and care are prioritised.

Delivered on time and to budget, the project has strengthened the hospice’s ability to provide specialist palliative care, supporting its mission and community outreach. The extension and refurbishment work were completed while maintaining full hospital operations – a testament to Amiri’s careful planning, collaboration, and respect for the sensitive environment.
